Malam Faruku, our grandfather, was married to Marwa'natu (Innaro), and they were blessed with four children: three sons—Auwal, Hameesu, and Jafaru—and a daughter, Safiya. Innaro was a woman deeply enamored with worldly pursuits, always striving to place her family’s interests above all else. She ensured that all her children received both religious and secular education. Safiya, however, was married off after completing primary school, while the rest obtained university degrees.
Innaro harbored great ambitions for her children, including carefully choosing their spouses. When Auwal, the eldest, completed his studies, Malam Faruku decided it was time for him to marry. Auwal introduced Ai’sha as his choice, but Innaro was immediately against it.
She declared Ai’sha unworthy, labeling her as immoral and of questionable background. Auwal tried to reason with his mother, explaining their relationship, but Innaro refused to listen. Malam Faruku initially remained silent, believing Innaro would relent, but her determination forced him to confront her.
Innaro’s reasoning was rooted in prejudice—she claimed Ai’sha did not share their lineage and implied she was unsuitable. Malam Faruku tried to explain that destiny governs everyone’s path and that Ai’sha should not be judged so harshly. When Innaro remained adamant, Malam Faruku overruled her objections and proceeded with the wedding preparations.
Who is Ai’sha?
Ai’sha was a young Nigerian girl whose life had been shaped by fate. She and her younger sister, Rabi’a, were born in Haifa but eventually found themselves in Nigeria, living in difficult circumstances. Ai’sha, the elder of the two, endured a harrowing ordeal when she was raped at a bus station late one night.
Malam Faruku, who happened to be delivering a message in Maiduguri, encountered the devastated family. Ai’sha was bleeding and in need of urgent care. Malam Faruku took her and her parents to the hospital, where Ai’sha recovered after four days. However, the emotional scars remained.
During their stay at the hospital, Malam Faruku learned that Ai’sha’s parents were homeless. Out of compassion, he offered them a small room in his home, repairing and walling it off for privacy.
This act of kindness did not sit well with Innaro. She viewed Ai’sha and her family as intruders and made her displeasure known. Despite her protests, Malam Faruku stood firm, reminding her that he was free to help whom he wished.
Innaro’s resentment towards Ai’sha’s family grew, leading to constant criticism and insults. Ai’sha, however, endured the hostility with patience, refusing to retaliate. Malam Faruku went a step further by teaching Ai’sha’s father a trade to help them become self-sufficient.
Meanwhile, Auwal and Ai’sha fell in love, despite the challenges surrounding them. Their bond grew stronger over two years, though they kept their relationship a secret from everyone except Rabi’a. Ai’sha, haunted by her traumatic past, feared intimacy but found solace in Auwal’s unwavering support.
Their love story was one of resilience and quiet determination, unfolding amidst a storm of societal expectations and familial conflicts.
